Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lewis Run, Pennsylvania. Should you require drug or alcohol testing via hair sampling, we are experts in this testing method with facilities Nationwide, covering all cities for convenient access. The typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for a sample. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and personalized hair analysis.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse specialists are choosing hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers see the advantage in this method for its extended detection duration of up to 90 days, distinguishing it with observed collections and difficulty in tampering. For drug monitoring in the past five days, however, urine testing remains highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands of hair (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, produces 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair indicate only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This encompasses confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input missing from a digital chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient means to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen needs verification to be court-admissible. Samples that screen presumptively positive require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample screens presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations in comparison to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex practice to execute.

Any positive Screening outcome undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleaned prior to Confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which provide a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to evade: Evading a hair drug test is significantly challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It shows patterns of drug use over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally entail greater costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
