Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Library, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, offering services across numerous cities nationwide. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp, or body hair may be used in some situations. Hair samples can reveal drug or alcohol/ETG use, or other specialized testing criteria.

Recently, the shift towards drug testing has prominently featured the hair follicle method. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug screenings over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing stringent drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on hair follicle tests due to an extended detection window lasting up to 90 days, conducted under strict observation, and highly resistant to tampering. For detecting recent usage within 5 days, however, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline by locking in biomarkers inside the fibers as the hair grows. Hair taken nearer to the scalp offers a detection span of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substance usage. It's straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or more than 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equal mass of body hair can be used instead. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair; body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result is processed through four main laboratory stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing a sample into a laboratory's framework. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening carries out a preliminary and swift drug abuse assessment. Although Screening provides a cost-effective means of excluding drug usage for most samples, a positive result in this phase requires confirmation for legal use. Samples that return a presumptive positive from Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples noted in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. It's during this stage that substances are pulled from hair at distinctly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex method to perform.

For confirmation of any positive screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. Samples with presumptive positive results get a wash prior to confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection scope.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage insight: This method offers a comprehensive look at drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Output variability: Influences like hair color and unique hair growth rates can impact the degree of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing showcases numerous advantages over classic urine tests, particularly in Library, PA. It detects a broader spectrum of substances with exceptional accuracy, making it a superior choice. Hair tests provide extensive reliability due to their inability to be easily manipulated, offering employers and authorities a trustworthy result.

While urine tests commonly identify drug use within a short timeframe, hair follicle tests paint a detailed picture of an individual’s history over several months. This broadened view equips decision-makers with the insights required to make informed choices while upholding workplace integrity and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Library, PA benefit from hair follicle testing due to its expanded detection period, effectively tracking drug usage over a substantial timeframe—often up to 90 days. This technique allows employers to gain thorough insights into the substance habits of applicants or current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
