Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lilly, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we excel in hair testing with available testing centers across the nation. Hair samples generally require 1.5 to 2 inches of growth from the crown or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more common in recent years for its advantages over standard tests. It's favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts for zero-tolerance policies. Unlike urine tests, hair tests offer a longer detection period of up to 90 days and are nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use, by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can reveal a detection period for alcohol and drugs that extends to roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's circumference) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and further analysis. For EtG, additional drugs, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest verifying specimen weight using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When referencing head hair, we imply only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial processing into a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample remains sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid drug check. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to hold up in court. Samples that presumptively yield positive results during Screening indeed require subsequent confirmation.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are taken from hair at a far lower concentration than found in other analyses (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing is notably the most challenging methodology.

Any positive screening outcome is verified by employing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty in cheating: Cheating a hair drug test proves to be very challenging, thus ensuring the results' accuracy.
  • Historical pattern: It can portray a pattern of drug consumption spanning a timeline, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: A duration of approximately 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
