Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lincoln Park, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is well-versed in hair testing, with centers in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized testing options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle tests. Organizations such as employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by those with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation-bound individuals. The key advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation and challenging to tamper with. However, for detecting drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a retrospective account of substance usage by encapsulating biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of roughly up to 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the same amount of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s database. This phase ensures that the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs. While screening is a budget-friendly method for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, confirmed positivity is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptive positive in screening must undergo confirmation.

If screening indicates presumptive positivity, additional hair from the original sample is extracted and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug testing among the most intricate to execute.

Confirmation of any screening positives is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast with urine tests that have a much smaller detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are exceedingly difficult to rig, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Captures long-term usage: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to monitor immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other test methodologies.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Even though they're often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
