Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Little Britain, Pennsylvania. For your hair drug or alcohol test requirements, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider with a specialization in hair testing. Our testing centers are available in numerous cities nationwide for hair test execution. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is typically required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

Hair follicle drug tests are increasingly becoming a standard method for drug testing in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are often opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This type of testing is particularly favored by employers who enforce zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary contexts. The key advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection period for substance use, reaching up to 90 days, with observed collections making it highly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary examination for drug abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that show a presumptively positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the assessment is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Little Britain, PA, hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and long-term reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair testing can identify drug use over a long period, providing a more comprehensive picture of a person's substance history.

When comparing hair and urine testing, hair tests offer an unparalleled level of precision. While urine tests provide instant readings, hair tests expand the detection window, ensuring any substance use is tracked with greater accuracy, proving especially useful for employers with strict drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Little Britain, PA, offers an extended detection window that can uncover drug use up to 90 days prior. This capability gives employers deeper insights into an individual's substance history, ensuring that they are making informed decisions based on longer-term data.

The extended detection period of hair follicle tests is pivotal for comprehensive evaluations. By assessing drug use history over several months, hair testing empowers employers with meaningful data that can be critical when assessing potential hires or monitoring employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
