Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Liverpool, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, boasting testing facilities in every city throughout the nation where hair evaluations can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required for the majority of cases. Hair tests can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair assessment choices.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common for substance testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug testing over traditional urine analysis. This testing method is preferred by employers with stringent drug-use policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window for drug usage, which usually spans up to 90 days, collected via a supervised process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, to detect substance use within the preceding five days, urine testing remains the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to acquire, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result needs verification to be valid in legal contexts. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening demand further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the hardest technique to perform.

Any positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection period.
  • Cheating is challenging: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Liverpool, PA, offer significant advantages over traditional urine tests. One of the primary benefits lies in their enhanced detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests that typically identify recent drug use, hair analysis provides a broader detection scope, making it a superior choice for many applications. Furthermore, the reliability of hair tests ensures that the results are consistent across different testing scenarios.

Hair tests substantially outperform urine tests in terms of offering a comprehensive assessment of drug use over an extended period. This ability to detect substances long after use renders hair follicle testing an invaluable resource for employers looking to implement zero-tolerance drug policies effectively, with the reliability of results boosting their confidence in the screening process.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Liverpool, PA, offers an extended detection window, enabling it to identify drug use over a much longer duration, reaching up to 90 days. This expansive timeframe provides employers with a more thorough insight into an individual’s substance history, making it a preferred option for those seeking a comprehensive understanding of potential drug use.

This extensive detection scope can be crucial for maintaining workplace safety and compliance with drug-free policies. By providing a fuller picture of an applicant or employee’s past substance use, hair testing aids in making more informed hiring or retention decisions, ensuring a safer and more productive work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing in Liverpool, PA, makes it a standout choice for ensuring authentic results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
