In Longfellow, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. For those needing a hair or alcohol screening, our centers, located in cities nationwide, specialize in hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent years, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more common in drug screening methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are chosen by those with zero-tolerance drug policies. A benefit is the longer detection window of up to 90 days. Hair tests are difficult to tamper with, unlike urine tests, which are more suitable for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended-term record of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp will yield 100mg, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to determine the weight of the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be utilized. Reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory procedure of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves verifying that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that appear positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: It's exceedingly difficult to falsify results of a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: Allows for tracking drug use patterns over time, beyond merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally have higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence concentration levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
