Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Malvern, PA. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you need, Accredited Drug Testing has testing centers in cities across the nation equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to your needs.

Over recent years, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a detection window up to 90 days, an observed collection process, making them almost tamper-proof. For drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to approximately 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, serving as the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advocate weighing the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent portion of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for assessing drug test findings involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system, involving the verification that the specimen was correctly sealed and sent, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any non-electronic data input not supplied by the electronic custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be validated to be permissible in a legal setting. Any samples indicating positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumed positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screened results is performed using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and it meets the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus the results are more reliable.
  • Delivers historical insights: It yields a timeline of substance use over an extended period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair coloration and individual hair growth differences can influence the amount of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Though frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Malvern, PA Hair follicle tests offer a distinct edge over traditional urine tests. They boast superior accuracy and reliability, crucial for effective drug screening. Unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period, hair tests provide a longer window and a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, reducing the risk of undetected usage.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Malvern, PA Hair follicle testing extends the detection period for drug use up to 90 days, offering a broader understanding of an individual’s history. Employers gain valuable insights, allowing for judicious hiring decisions. The extended window captures intermittent substance use that might otherwise escape detection, providing a critical tool for ensuring workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
