Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Maple Glen, Pennsylvania. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing offers you numerous centers across all cities nationwide, accommodating such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These hair tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

In recent decades, hair follicle drug testing methods have gained traction. Increasingly, employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opt for them over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance policy employers, the judiciary, and probation officers. Their significant advantage lies in their extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected through observed means, presenting nearly unfakeable results. However, for recent drug use detection, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-term substance history by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. This method is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or extensive tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent mass of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory assessment of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While being an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If hinted positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than with other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
