Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we have centers for testing in every city across the nation. To perform a valid test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is generally required. These tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a method of choice for drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are vital for organizations with strict drug policies and are utilized by legal authorities. Hair follicle drug testing offers a longer detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring high reliability, and is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting very recent usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow, hair offers a long-term record of substance use. When sourced from near the scalp, a hair sample can detect the presence of alcohol and other drugs for a period of up to 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp, yields about 100mg of hair, which is ideal for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG specific tests and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test revolves around four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This step guarantees the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation that looks for drugs of abuse. This step is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples. However, any positive result identified during Screening requires a secondary confirmation to be validated in legal contexts.

Should a sample yield a presumed positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare it for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid). Thus, hair drug analysis is among the most challenging methodologies.

All positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, all presumptively positive samples are cleaned as required. The full laboratory testing process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: Hair analysis offers insights into sustained patterns of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the actual test evaluates the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
