Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Marietta, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide to administer these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for the analysis. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent times, the incorporation of hair follicle testing in drug screening has increased. Many companies, judicial systems, and substance misuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers often choose hair follicle evaluations. The key advantage of these tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and hard to falsify. However, for screening drug use in the recent five days, urine tests still offer the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

HTML

Hair testing has emerged as a key method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By ensnaring biomarkers within the tuft of the growing hair shaft, hair reveals a prolonged record of alcohol and other drug usage. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal a drug and alcohol detection period of up to approximately three months. Collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A hair specimen of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil), taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. In cases of EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair is an acceptable substitute. When referring to head hair, it is specifically about scalp hair. All other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.) are regarded as body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process leading to a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's database. This step involves ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any ancillary data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an expedited evaluation for drugs of misuse. Although Screening serves as an economical approach to negate drug presence in most cases, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for it to be valid in legal proceedings. Any sample that yields a presumptive positive in Screening requires a follow-up confirmation.

In instances of presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are garnered from the hair at much lesser concentrations in comparison to other methods like urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Challenges in deception: Attempting to deceive a hair drug test proves exceedingly difficult, thus ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals drug usage trends over an interval, not merely new usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: A window of approximately 5-7 days is required post-consumption before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically costlier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly mistaken as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
