Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Marion Hill, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing facilities available in every city nationwide to conduct these exams. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing services.

Recently, drug testing methods are increasingly leaning towards hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle exams are chosen for their zero-tolerance policy compliance, judicial requirements, and probation cases. Their extended detection window, up to 90 days, ensures collection integrity and is hard to manipulate. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still offer higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

As an effective approach for identifying substance and alcohol consumption, hair testing is highly regarded. By embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers, hair can reveal extensive histories of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or beyond 10-panel screenings, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial sample intake process within a laboratory’s system. This procedure ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid initial assessment for illicit substances. While a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legal in court. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper: It's highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Supplies backdated data: It demonstrates a drug use pattern over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to determine recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to materialize in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variance: Hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: While frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
