Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Markle, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with locations in all major cities Nationwide where a hair test can be performed. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair is sufficient. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized hair testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction as a method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict anti-drug policies, the judiciary, and probation officers favor hair follicle tests. The foremost advantage of using hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, administered in a supervised setting, making it hard to tamper with. That said, for identifying recent drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the more precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a valuable instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and other drugs for as long as approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean solely scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s database. This part includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates confirmation to be legally defensible. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

In cases where the Screening phase renders a sample presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples assumed to be positive are cleansed ahead of confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a lesser detection period.
  • Harder to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thereby making the findings more reliable.
  • Yields historical insight: It can provide an account of drug use over a span of time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically come at a higher cost than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing mainly through its extended detection timeline, which provides a more thorough account of an individual's substance use. In Markle, PA, the superior reliability and accuracy of hair testing mean that it captures a broader picture of an individual's drug consumption, making it invaluable for contexts where detailed drug history is crucial.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
