Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive hair follicle drug testing service in McCandless Township, Pennsylvania. Specialized in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers across numerous cities nationwide are equipped to carry out hair analyses. Generally, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is sufficient. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method in recent times. This technique is now often requested by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance work environments, probationers, and legal settings, its major advantage lies in its ability to detect drug use over a longer duration, up to 90 days, with observation ensuring authenticity, making it difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged account of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal a monitoring period of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is moderately tricky, and its shipment is undemanding.

A sample size of 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for initial testing and verification. For EtG supplements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advocated. It's advised to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. Our reference to head hair implies scalp hair exclusively. In contrast, body hair denotes all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Synopsis

The laboratory process for determining a drug test outcome includes four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system, confirming the sample's seal and appropriate shipment, allocating a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that the electronic chain of custody system has yet to cover.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of misuse. While a cost-efficient method, Screening can't serve as court evidence unless a positive result undergoes confirmation. Any samples identified as presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

Should a specimen be identified as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction, where the drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening emerges as the most challenging procedure to execute.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples receive a wash before any necessary confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair drug tests identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating resistance: Due to the difficulty in cheating, hair drug test results hold higher accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It uncovers drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become identifiable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair hue and personal variations in hair growth may alter the drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Important: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis occurs on the hair strand not the scalp's follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Testing in McCandless Township, PA A significant advantage of hair testing over urine tests is its ability to identify drug use accurately over an extended timeframe, up to 90 days. This longer detection period provides a comprehensive insight into the subject's substance history, ensuring superior accuracy compared to traditional urine methods.

The reliability of hair follicle tests also surpasses that of urine tests. With urine samples, there is often the potential for tampering or contamination which compromises the accuracy of the results. Hair tests are not only tamper-resistant but also offer a more reliable detection rate.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in McCandless Township, PA Hair follicle testing offers a remarkable advantage with its ability to review drug usage over a period of up to 90 days. This extended detection window allows employers to obtain a holistic and thorough insight into an individual's substance use over a more extended timeframe, enhancing decision-making concerning hiring and workplace safety.

Through this method, employers are assured a detailed examination of a potential or existing employee’s drug use history, helping ensure that workplace environments remain safe and drug-free.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Robust Tamper-Resistant Testing Hair follicle tests, conducted in McCandless Township, PA, significantly curb the risk of sample adulteration. This testing method ensures reliability and integrity in results as it’s challenging to forge or tamper with compared to other testing options like urine samples, which can be subject to dilution or substitution.

The inherent robustness of hair testing provides a trustworthy assessment of an individual’s drug consumption, bolstering the confidence of employers, legal entities, and other stakeholders in the test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
