Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Meadowlands, Pennsylvania. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available in various U.S. cities to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body, these evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored test types.

Over the past few years, there has been a notable increase in the use of hair follicle drug tests. Employers, the legal system, and substance abuse specialists now often prefer these tests over conventional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and those managing probation cases commonly utilize hair tests, capitalizing on their capability to reveal drug use over up to 90 days and their robust collection process, making them very difficult to manipulate. For recently ingested substances, however, urine tests maintain their status as the most precise method for detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substance usage by embedding markers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection frame for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprised of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair—the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests including EtG, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to measure the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of drug test results involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, samples are initially processed into the laboratory system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported properly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective means to exclude drug use for most samples; however, any positive indication needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging approach to execute.

Verification of positive screening results is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before Confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • High integrity: Hair tests are hard to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insights: Shows drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs are typically detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods, hair follicle tests clearly outperform urine tests, especially in Meadowlands, PA. Not only do they offer superior detection over a significant period, but they also ensure accurate results that can be trusted. This reliability factor is crucial for employers and legal entities prioritizing drug-free environments.

In Meadowlands, the preference for hair over urine tests is growing due to the comprehensive detection capabilities and the fact that hair testing provides more extensive insights into a person's substance-use history, unlike the narrow window offered by urine analyses.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
