Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania. Our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, with centers in every city ready to conduct tests. For effective analysis, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our testing options encompass drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has emerged as a more prevalent testing method. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer this over traditional urine tests. It's favored for zero-tolerance policies, judicial requirements, or probationary checks. Its primary advantage is a detection window extending to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained prominence as an effective means to uncover substance use. Hair can reveal extended usage details by encapsulating markers within the fibers of a growing hair strand. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and conveniently transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or for panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair may be used. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where the sample is entered into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be verified for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is used from the original specimen for Extraction. During this stage, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), exemplifying the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screened result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire process adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insight: It reveals the pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
