Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Middleburg, Pennsylvania. Those in need of a drug or alcohol assessment through hair testing can rely on our thorough expertise, with testing sites available in cities across the nation. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. A range of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over the more traditional urine analysis. These tests are vital for institutions with strict no-drug policies and used by courts and probationers. Among the benefits of hair testing are its extensive detection window, up to 90 days, and a monitored collection process, making it very hard to falsify. However, to identify drug use in the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair's structure preserves biomarkers within its growing strands, offering an extended history of substance intake. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use within an approximately 3-month timeframe for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, generally hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment made up of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. The specimen should be measured using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprises four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into the laboratory's system. This step involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the specimen, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any necessary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drug presence. Although Screening is an affordable method to eliminate drug usage in most cases, any positive screening needs to be validated for legal purposes. Specimens identified as presumptively positive during Screening demand further confirmation.

Should a specimen appear presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and set up for Extraction. This stage isolates drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive specimens are cleansed as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and certified according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: This method can reveal a timeline of drug usage, not just recent intake.

Constraints:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other inspection methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
