In Mill Hall, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require an alcohol or drug hair test, our expertise lies in hair examinations, with testing facilities available across Nationwide cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body is required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing alternatives.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has increased for several years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over standard urine analyses. Ideal for zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probationary individuals, hair follicle tests have a key advantage: a detection window of up to 90 days, utilizing a strictly observed collection process, making manipulation nearly impossible. For recent drug use within five days, however, the urine test remains more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. By capturing biomarkers in the strands, it provides a prolonged detection timeline through the growth of hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage up to a roughly three-month period. It is straightforward to obtain, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

An optimal test sample consists of 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair suitable for analysis. For EtG, additional testing, and panels exceeding ten, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent sample of body hair is a viable alternative. Head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The drug test processing at the laboratory comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system, which involves ensuring the correct sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entries absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening performs an initial quick search for abused drugs. Though economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a detected positive in Screening requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives after Screening, additional strands are extracted for further examination. In this Extraction process, drugs are isolated at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or saliva. This makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any candidates showing a presumptive positive are washed prior to this confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited scope.
  • Limitations to tampering: Hair tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Insight into previous consumption: It helps offer a historical overview of drug use, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing typically costs more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and growth differences can alter metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
