Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Modena, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the country equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Hair screenings can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Many businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer a hair drug examination over traditional urine screening. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary programs due to their longer detection timeframe, which extends up to 90 days, their direct collection method, and difficulty to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term record of substance use by retaining biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, it’s challenging to tamper with, and is convenient for shipping.

An optimal sample of 1.5 inches, about 200 hair strands (approximating the girth of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or over 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advised. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively, while body hair includes other types like facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase of entering a sample into the lab’s system. This step involves checking if the sample is correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs further confirmation to be valid for legal purposes. Any samples with presumed positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample shows a presumed positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Supplies historical insights: Hair tests can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Modena, PA Hair follicle tests offer several advantages over traditional urine tests. One key benefit is their ability to detect drug use over a longer period, typically up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests. This extended detection period provides a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, making it ideal for employers who need reliable data.

Moreover, hair testing is nearly impossible to cheat since it requires a sample collected in an observed process. Urine tests can be susceptible to tampering; however, hair samples are more secure, ensuring authenticity in the results. These factors combined make hair follicle tests a more dependable option for employers and legal entities.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Modena, PA The hair follicle testing method shines with its extended detection window of up to 90 days, far exceeding the brief detection time of urine tests. This extensive timeframe is crucial for employers in Modena, PA, seeking a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's substance use history.

By examining the hair, testing centers can provide insights into patterns of drug use over several months, unlike urine tests, which may only capture recent use. This comprehensive analysis allows employers to make well-informed decisions when it comes to hiring or maintaining a safe workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Modena, PA Hair follicle testing is a robust solution for minimizing the risk of sample tampering. Unlike urine tests, which can be adulterated with various substances, hair samples are difficult to manipulate, ensuring the integrity of the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
