In Mont Alto, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we excel in this area, with testing centers available in every city nationwide equipped to perform hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. These examinations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Lately, the trend in drug testing methods increasingly favors hair follicle drug analysis. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine analyses. Those with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationers are among the main users. Hair follicle tests provide a longer drug-use detection period of up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are nearly fraud-proof. However, to assess drug consumption within the last five days, urine tests remain the optimal choice.

What it is, How it works

The application of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can present a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to approximately three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An ideal specimen for screening and verification consists of a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. Our reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure of laboratory processing for a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, involving the sample’s integration into a laboratory’s systems. This process includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any omitted data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to hold up in court. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require a further confirmation.

Should the Screening stage indicate a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples receive washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is very hard to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical information: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: A span of approximately 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
