In Mount Eagle, PA, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise includes both drug and alcohol hair testing, and we have facilities across the nation ready to conduct these assessments. Usually, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body. This method is adaptable for various substances, including alcohol/ETG and other specialized tests.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug screening. Employers, the legal system, and substance abuse experts are increasingly preferring this method over traditional urine tests. Businesses with strict drug policies, legal entities, and probationary programs use hair testing due to its longer detection window, which can extend up to 90 days. It's also collected under supervised conditions, making it difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests still excel in identifying recent drug consumption within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by preserving biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Obtaining hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable amount of body hair might be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all alternative hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This procedure checks that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a result of a positive screen must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Any samples that preliminarily test positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing presents the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are pre-washed as needed prior to confirmation testing. The comprehensive lab process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and under the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are inherently harder to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: They can demonstrate a timeline of drug use over durations, unlike just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Mount Eagle, PA: Hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. They provide an extensive detection window of up to 90 days, allowing for a comprehensive overview of an individual’s substance use history. This is ideal for employers in Mount Eagle who prioritize creating a safe and drug-free workplace environment.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing is much harder to manipulate. This makes it a more reliable option for employers, providing them with peace of mind about the integrity of the results. This testing method can identify a broader range of substances, ensuring potential drug use does not go unnoticed.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Mount Eagle, PA, offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, which exceeds most traditional drug testing methods. This broad window gives employers a detailed insight into an individual's substance history, which is crucial for hiring decisions and maintaining a safe working environment. Its long-term detection capability makes it a preferred choice for those needing comprehensive substance use screening.

Employers benefit immensely from this longer detection period, as it enables them to monitor ongoing substance use trends among employees and applicants. This comprehensive perspective allows businesses to maintain a vigilant stance on drug use, encouraging a safer and more productive workplace in Mount Eagle.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug testing significantly reduces the risk of tampering, ensuring reliable results in Mount Eagle, PA. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
