Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we offer test centers in every major city across the U.S. with the capability to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for detecting drugs. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are now often opting for hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers favor hair follicle tests. The significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, conducted in a supervised setting, making tampering extremely difficult. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers along with the growing fibers, offering a historical record of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, the detection window for substances is roughly 3 months. This method is straightforward to execute, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

Taking a 1.5-inch sample from approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) proximal to the scalp delivers 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, or when exceeding 10 panels, a minimum of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If a scalp sample cannot be procured, an equivalent body hair sample can be collected. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp strands, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory process that integrates a sample into a lab's system, confirming proper sealing and shipment, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples flagged as presumptive positives during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Presumptive positives in Screening lead to extracting additional hair from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. This step isolates drugs at lower concentrations from hair than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Exposed samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. Entire laboratory procedures, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergo evaluation under CAP (College of American Pathologists) and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Shows usage trends: Provides a consumption pattern over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent usage: Drugs become identifiable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally come at a higher cost compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the underlying follicle of the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
