Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Mount Union, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers across the nation capable of performing these tests. For testing, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required in most instances. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized options.

The trend of drug testing has shifted in recent years to favor hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer these over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, court-ordered individuals, and those on probation often undergo hair follicle drug testing. The key advantage is its extended detection period for drug use, typically covering up to 90 days. The collection process is observed, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the preferred option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When extracted close to the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment encompassing about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it's suggested to collect 150mg of the specimen. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is advised. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was securely sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to hold up in court. Samples that return a presumptive positive in Screening do necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Upon a positive presumption during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug screening is the most intricate method to execute.

Any positive results from screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection frame.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, lending more precision to the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to document recent use: Drugs become apparent in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally entail higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mount Union, PA, hair drug tests surpass urine tests due to their superior accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which cover a short detection period, hair analysis offers an extended window of detection. This makes it harder to manipulate and provides consistent results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
