Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Muse, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with nationwide centers capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly adopted in drug evaluations. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor this method over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed where zero-tolerance policies for drug use are upheld, such as in courts and for individuals on probation. A core advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, often reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervised environments, making them hard to circumvent. For drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed historical account of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. If taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step of incorporating a sample into the lab's system. This covers verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift evaluation for substance misuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient solution to identify non-usage in most samples, any positive result needs verification for legal acceptability. Samples suspected to be positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most complex technique to execute.

Verification of any Screening positive is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credential and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields systematic data: It can portray a trajectory of substance use over time, not solely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
