In Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in these tests, we have centers nationwide to conduct hair drug or alcohol testing. Hair samples must be 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body in most cases. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific testing needs.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts demand it over traditional urine tests. Its advantages include a prolonged detection period, often reaching 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making it nearly impossible to falsify. Although for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair provides an extended chronological record of alcohol and drug usage by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When collected proximate to the scalp, hair can potentially offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When head hair is mentioned, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome entails four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes validating the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial brief assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an affordable means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to apply.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more accurate results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insights into the pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
