Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair strand drug tests in New Albany, Pennsylvania. For those needing a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing, with centers across all U.S. cities equipped for it. You should ideally have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body to be tested. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other custom options.

Lately, there's been a rise in using hair follicle tests for drug detection. More employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over standard urine ones. Employers with no drug-use policies, courts, and probationary cases favor hair testing due to its key advantage: an extended detection window for substances, lasting up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, making it tough to tamper with. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing markers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reflect substance use for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly pencil-sized) near the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial intake of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening provides an initial drug use check. While cost-effective for ruling out illegal substance use in most samples, a Screening's positive result must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples presumed positive in Screening require secondary verification.

For samples presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted and readied for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical consumption: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become visible in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In New Albany, PA, hair follicle testing exhibits clear advantages over traditional urine tests. One significant benefit is its ability to identify substance use with superior accuracy and reliability, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of uses. Unlike urine tests, which generally offer a shorter detection window, hair tests cover up to 90 days, thus presenting a broader overview of an individual's drug history.

Another advantage of hair follicle testing over urine testing is its resilience against result manipulation. Hair samples are collected under observation, minimizing the risk of tampering or substitution. This aspect of hair testing ensures a level of integrity and dependability that is paramount for organizations maintaining zero-tolerance drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in New Albany, PA, provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug usage history. By covering up to 90 days of substance use, hair follicle tests allow employers to gain insights into a candidate's long-term behaviors, thus facilitating informed hiring decisions.

Employers benefit from the longer detection period of hair testing, enhancing their ability to safeguard the workplace from potential substance-related issues. With visibility into up to three months of drug use, organizations can establish a thorough understanding of an applicant's or employee's substance patterns, promoting a safer work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
