Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in New Bedford, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of drug or alcohol hair testing, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing services and boasts testing centers in every city across the nation capable of performing such tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown is generally required, and body hair is an alternative in many instances. With the capability to analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has risen as a method for drug testing. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with no-tolerance drug policies, judicial applications, and individuals under probation. One significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, with collection conducted under observation, largely preventing deception. However, for drug detection within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective tool for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding markers within the strands of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of evaluating a drug test in the laboratory comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped accurately, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry tasks not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Though cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires further confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples yielding presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Availability of historical data: It can offer a record of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Attributes like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite the common reference to "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing in New Bedford, PA, are significant. Hair tests have a superior detection accuracy, offering results that are difficult to manipulate. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a much longer detection time, making them a more reliable choice for employers and courts seeking thorough information.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
