Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle substance screenings in New Brighton, Pennsylvania. If a hair or alcohol screening is required, we specialize in this method and provide nationwide locations for testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, legal bodies, and substance misuse experts often prefer this method over urine tests. Organizations with strict policies, judicial systems, and probation departments find value in this approach. The main advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days and the difficulty in tampering with the sample. Despite this, for detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair offers a prolonged history of substance use. When collected from near the scalp, hair can reflect alcohol and drug use for as long as three months. The process of collecting hair samples is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and it's convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands of hair, about the circumference of a #2 pencil, nearest to the scalp, constitutes a 100mg sample, which is optimal for screening and confirmatory processes. For EtG, additional or extended tests involving more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively means scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system. This phase includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not cover.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for substance abuse, serving as a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples. However, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed to be valid in a legal setting. All samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirming any positive result from screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation when needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days compared to the narrower detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage information: It offers a timeline of substance use rather than merely indicating recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The superiority of hair follicle testing over urine testing lies in its enhanced detection precision and reliability. Unlike traditional methods, hair tests trace substance use over a much longer span, ensuring employers in New Brighton precise insights into substance habits.

Hair testing's superior accuracy stems from its ability to capture the presence of drugs consumed in the past three months. In contrast, urine tests often only cover recent use, leaving room for inaccuracies in identifying long-term patterns.

When comparing these methods, hair testing proves to be more reliable for companies aiming to uphold strict drug policies. Its extended window provides a clearer picture of an individual's substance history, making it a valuable tool for comprehensive screening.

Extended Detection Window

An advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to monitor up to 90 days of drug use, giving employers in New Brighton an extensive overview of an individual's history with substances.

This extended detection span is particularly beneficial for companies looking to maintain drug-free environments. Unlike other testing forms, hair tests provide a comprehensive insight into past behaviors.

Employers find value in this broader coverage, as it aids in making more informed decisions regarding potential or current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug tests reduce the likelihood of sample tampering, ensuring dependable results in New Brighton. Such tests shield against meddling, a prevalent issue in other testing methods.

The robustness of hair testing deters adulteration attempts, safeguarding the integrity of drug testing outcomes. Employers benefit from this certainty, focusing on result accuracy and reliability.

Ensuring drug test results are trustworthy boosts confidence among employers who prioritize integrity in their workplace policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
