In New Paris, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is accessible nationwide, including locally. Typically, a hair sample from the head, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, or body hair is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized options.

Recently, there's an increasing trend towards using hair follicle drug testing. This test is often preferred by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors who require more reliability than urine tests. Hair testing provides an extended window of up to 90 days for detection and ensures precise, tamper-proof results. Despite its advantages, urine tests are still recommended for detecting very recent drug use, within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the continuously growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, with low possibilities for tampering, and it's easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s infrastructure. This stage involves checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for drugs of misuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective strategy for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a favorable screen must be validated for courtroom acceptance. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug evaluation the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed pre-confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair hue and individual variations in hair development can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why is hair follicle testing superior to urine testing in New Paris, PA? Hair tests offer an unmatched level of detection accuracy, far exceeding traditional urine methods. Their ability to trace drug usage over an extended time period gives them the edge, ensuring that past substance use is detected reliably and accurately.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle tests offer an enhanced detection window. While urine tests are generally limited to recent drug use, hair testing can encompass a broader timeframe, uncovering historical usage patterns and providing a fulsome view of an individual’s substance history.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in New Paris, PA allows for the identification of drug use over a much prolonged period, up to 90 days. Such a timeframe enables employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance use history, which is invaluable for making informed decisions about hiring and retaining employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
