Located in New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing, we offer these services nationwide, ensuring tests for drugs and alcohol (ETG) are readily available. Most tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Our hair tests can detect drug use, alcohol, or can be tailored to specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent as a method for drug screening. Organizations such as employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now favor this over traditional urine tests. Hair tests, known for a zero-tolerance policy, are popular due to their 90-day detection window, strictly observed collection, and resistance to cheating. However, within a 5-day scope, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair can record a historical timeline of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the evolving hair shaft. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of around 90 days for both alcohol and substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A cut of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unattainable, a similar quantity of body hair might be procured. In discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair alludes to all other varieties (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in a laboratory drug test workflow are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This incorporates validating that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an automated chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary examination for illicit drug use. Although Screening serves as an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires Confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during the Screening, more hair is sourced from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much more subtle concentration versus other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing presents the most complex methodology to achieve.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to Confirmation where necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designator and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, compared to urine assessments which possess a briefer detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug evaluation proves highly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Shows usage trends: It can indicate a drug use pattern across time, beyond mere recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days before becoming noticeable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements including hair color and individual growth differentials can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly labeled "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with urine analysis in New Tripoli, PA, the former stands out for reliability. Hair tests surpass traditional urine tests in detection accuracy, boasting a wider detection window, up to 90 days. This superior timeline allows for an expanded perspective on substance usage, whereas urine tests capture a limited timeframe, offering diminished insights into consistent drug use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in New Tripoli, PA, offers an extensive detection window, uncovering drug use over up to 90 days. This extensive timeline equips employers with a detailed retrospective of an individual’s substance history, enabling more informed hiring decisions. The long-lasting detection capability surpasses that of urine testing, which only detects recent drug use, proving invaluable for comprehensive substance monitoring.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In New Tripoli, PA, the hair follicle test exemplifies a tamper-resistant process. Through difficult-to-alter samples, hair tests avert the risk of test adulteration—a common issue with urine testing. This robust method minimizes manipulation, ensuring results are authentic and trustworthy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
