In Newtown Grant, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle analysis for drug screening. With numerous testing centers across all major cities, we cater to your hair drug or alcohol test needs. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair length is typically required for head or alternative body sources, allowing us to analyze drug, alcohol/ETG, or create tailored hair test options.

Recently, hair follicle drug screenings have become more prevalent in drug-testing protocols. Increasingly, organizations, courts, and substance abuse experts favor this method over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals benefit from its longer drug detection timeline, which extends up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and resists manipulation. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting very recent drug usage within a few days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become a recognized method for identifying substance use, offering a comprehensive history by capturing biomarkers within the hair's fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol consumption over an estimated 3-month period. The collection process is straightforward, making it challenging to alter, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg for optimal screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is ideal. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advised. If scalp hair isn't accessible, body hair of equivalent quantity can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test lab processing comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins by integrating a sample into the lab's system, including verifying its seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. It's an economical approach for excluding drug use in most samples, but positive screens need confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples marked as presumptive positives require further verification.

Should a sample be flagged as positive in Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than in methods like urine or saliva, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

All positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair tests are tough to deceive, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It provides insights into drug use over a timeframe, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to track recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Hair color and individual growth variations can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly misidentified as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Newtown Grant, PA
Hair tests surpass urine in detection accuracy and reliability. With a longer detection span, hair testing extensively reviews substance use history, offering superior insights compared to the brief window urine tests provide. Hair analysis gives an unparalleled overview of an individual's drug-use timeline, making it an optimal choice for stringent drug-free policies.

Employers and legal entities recognize the advantages of hair screening over ua in terms of longevity in detection and the inability to tamper with results. This ensures a steadfast method that upholds the reliability of findings, granting complete security in the drug evaluation process. The innovative nature of hair testing allows for better employment practices and confidence in employee health and safety standards.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
