Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Newville, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with testing centers across all cities nationwide that can administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now require a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Employers with no-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and probationary individuals use hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its prolonged detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, and difficult to adulterate. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the leading accurate test.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Unlike other methods, it offers a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. By sampling hair close to the scalp, it's possible to obtain a detection period of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Acquiring a sample of 200 hair strands, equivalent to a 1.5-inch section near the scalp, yields around 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For Enhanced EtG, additional tests, or beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. Should scalp hair not be an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The process of obtaining a drug test result in the lab consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory process of registering a sample into the laboratory's system. This step involves checking that the sample is sealed and transported appropriately, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for the presence of drugs. Although it is an economical way to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screening requires validation to be valid in legal situations. Presumptively positive samples from Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the sample for the Extraction process. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), adding to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation when necessary. Every lab stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined with reference to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine testing with a shorter time frame.
  • Resistant to tampering: The difficulty of tampering with hair drug tests ensures higher accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: Allows for the detection of drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Hair tests require about 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to become detectable.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Often mischaracterized as "hair follicle tests", these examinations actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
