Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Niverton, Pennsylvania. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in this area with testing facilities located in cities across the nation. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Many companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation use hair tests because they offer a longer drug detection period, generally up to 90 days, through an observed process that's hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by incorporating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection timeline for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process to produce a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of a sample’s journey into a laboratory’s system. This stage ensures the sample’s seal and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for potential drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation step.

Should a sample register as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques are used for confirming any positive screening results. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to cheat: The difficulty of tampering with a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
