Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Washington, Pennsylvania. For individuals requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis and provides testing facilities in cities across the Nation. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific analyses.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method in recent years. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation gain from hair tests' extended detection timeline, which can be up to 90 days. Collected under supervision, these tests are highly reliable and tamper-proof. However, urine tests are still the most accurate for recent drug use detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage over roughly a three-month period. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transportation is simple.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. It is preferable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By scalp hair, we mean specifically head hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any additional data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive in the Screening phase need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are harvested from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening procedures.

Confirmation of any positive result from the screening phase utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is notably hard to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, enhancing their reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs are typically traceable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing methods, hair drug tests tend to be more costly.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels detected in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
