Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Northumberland, Pennsylvania. Whether a hair drug or alcohol examination is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, offering facilities across all cities Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for most instances. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific needs.

More recently, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle assessments. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probationers, frequently use these tests. A key advantage is their ability to reveal drug use over an extended window, often up to 90 days, with virtually no opportunity for tampering. However, for substance use within the last five days, urine tests still remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use due to biomarkers being embedded within the hair shaft as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month history for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Laboratory Processing Overview

The testing process in a lab is divided into four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is integrated into the lab's system. It involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary examination for drug traces. While Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires further confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that test as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo additional verification.

When a sample yields a presumptive positive in Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial collection and processed for Extraction. This stage involves retrieving drugs from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), adding to the complexity of hair drug tests.

To confirm any positive Screening outcome, tests such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are conducted. All samples deemed presumptively positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable findings.
  • Offers retrospective data: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Northumberland, PA, outperforms traditional urine tests with its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
