In O'Hara Township, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides full-range hair follicle drug assessments. Our testing centers, located throughout the nation, are experts in hair testing. Typically, hair from the head measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is needed, but body hair is an alternative. This method can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing preferences.

The last few years have seen hair follicle drug testing gain traction as a preferred method. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts now lean towards hair tests over the conventional urine analysis. The longer detection window—up to 90 days—makes it ideal for those with zero-tolerance policies. Despite its strengths, urine tests remain best for identifying recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term histories of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hairs (around the same thickness as a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. When conducting EtG tests, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are classified as body hair.

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory drug test result processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allotting a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Screening-positive samples require further verification.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging method.

Conclusive Confirmation of a positive Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are washed before confirmation if required. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, receives scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline drug use trends over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Doesn’t detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • More costly: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variation: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can vary based on factors like hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine tests in O'Hara Township, PA by providing unmatched detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are common, hair testing offers superior insights into comprehensive drug use patterns. Its longer detection window provides a clearer picture of an individual's substance history, enhancing employer assurance and making it an ideal choice for stringent work environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
