Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oak Hills, Pennsylvania. For those in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, we specialize in hair testing and boast testing centers across all cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, including employers, courts, and probation officers, due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, their collection under supervision, and the difficulty in tampering. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detection within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is considered an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. The hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within its growing strands. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can show a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a collection of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested that the sample's weight be measured using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When referring to head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of drug test results in a laboratory involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initializing a sample within a laboratory's system. This process ensures that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any additional data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While Screening efficiently excludes drug use for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to hold up in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary verification.

In cases where Screening suggests positivity, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation during the Extraction stage. During this step, drugs are isolated from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed for confirming any positive screening outcomes. Any samples deemed presumptively positive are washed as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Allows for detecting drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: Provides a timeline of drug usage over a period rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
