Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in Old Orchard, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair-based analysis for drugs or alcohol, we are hair testing experts with centers available across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our exams can determine drug use, alcohol/ETG levels, or other bespoke hair analyses.

Hair follicle analysis has become increasingly common in drug verification practices in recent times. This method is often favored by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists over standard urine tests. It is chosen by companies with strict no-drug policies, judiciary bodies, and probationers. The main advantage is its extended detection span for substances, usually up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making deception extremely difficult. However, urine tests remain most effective for recent drug exposure within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strand grows. By taking samples close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, modification is challenging, and transport is simple.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is preferred. It's advised to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the early phase of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. It involves validating that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening denotes an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive screening outcome must be substantiated to be valid in court. Every sample that tests positive in Screening requires secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, compounds are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Any positive screening outcome's Confirmation is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples that test positive are cleaned as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can spot drug intake for up to 90 days, versus urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical insight: The test can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent intake: Drugs typically become noticeable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently mentioned as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strands, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
