Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Osborne, Pennsylvania. When you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair assessments, and we maintain testing sites in every city nationwide capable of performing a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

Lately, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Hair follicle testing is favored by zero-tolerance employers, the courts, and probation individuals. Its primary advantage is extended detection for drug use, often up to 90 days, gathered through an observed process and almost impossible to tamper with. When screening for use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers extended insight into substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair strand's structure. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month timeframe for identifying alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. In terms of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test result comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial incorporation into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transmitted correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening proves economical in ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Any presumptive positives identified in Screening mandate further verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug testing's complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo necessary washes before confirmation. The whole laboratory pipeline from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug assessment is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides a drug use pattern over an extended duration, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to reach detectable levels in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
