Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Oval, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed. Results can be reviewed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often choose hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This type of testing is ideal for employers with strict drug-free policies and for judicial purposes. Its key advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, gathered in a supervised process, making cheating nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record for alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, these hair samples can reveal substance use within an approximately 3-month span. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximate size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the standard for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair; body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, which involves verifying the sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances. While Screening economically eliminates drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be substantiated for court use. Samples presumptively positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

For a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair definitions and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with narrower detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug testing is difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can map a pattern of drug ingestion over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
