In Oxford, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. If you require testing for substances, including alcohol or drugs, our centers across all cities nationwide are equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Our tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for this over traditional urine tests. This choice is prevalent among those enforcing zero-tolerance policies and supervising probation. Key advantages include its extended detection window of up to 90 days with an observed collection that is hard to manipulate. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. With its ability to capture biomarkers within the strands as hair grows, it serves as a long-term record of substance use. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it holds the potential to reveal a drug or alcohol history dating back as far as three months. Collection of hair is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) should provide approximately 100mg, which is considered the optimal amount for screening and verification. To test EtG, additional substances, or more extensive panel tests above ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. If no scalp hair is present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioned, head hair is specific to the scalp, while body hair includes all other types, such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

Key stages in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning commences the sample’s integration into the laboratory’s framework. This stage ensures the sample's integrity in terms of sealing and shipment, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for potential drug abuse. It stands as an economical tool for excluding drug use in most cases; however, any positive findings in Screening must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples with presumptive positive results necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples yielding potentially positive results in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and proceeds to Extraction. This step is marked by a more precise extraction of drugs from hair compared to other test types (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Should the situation warrant, all potentially positive samples are cleaned before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to the ISO/IEC 17025 credentialing standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug usage for up to three months, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Cheat-proof: Manipulating a hair drug test is remarkably hard, enhancing the result accuracy.
  • Tracks past use: It offers an overview of drug consumption over time rather than spotting only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other drug detection approaches.
  • Result disparities: Differences in hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is misleading since the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
