Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Palo Alto, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we are specialists in hair testing and have centers in all cities nationwide that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be utilized. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Hair drug tests are now favored by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Preferred by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, hair follicle drug tests offer extended detection up to 90 days, involve an observed collection process, and are nearly impossible to defraud, though urine tests remain optimal for recent use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can encapsulate a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by catching biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Once sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and it's convenient to transport.

An optimal sample comprises a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair suitable for assessment and validation. For EtG, supplemental, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other forms of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the initial procedure of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This phase includes validating proper sealing and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening represents a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Despite Screening being a cost-efficient measure to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive screening result must be corroborated to be legally substantive. Samples suspect as positive from Screening need additional corroboration.

If a sample is suspect as positive during Screening, further hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug analysis is notably challenging.

Any confirmed positive screening outcome is verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all suspect positive samples are pre-washed as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, as opposed to only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly mistaken as "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Palo Alto, PA, hair follicle testing has proven superior to traditional urine testing. The benefits are evident in its superior detection capabilities, which cover a longer usage history. Unlike urine tests, hair tests offer a broader detection window, making them more reliable for identifying long-term drug use.

Employers and legal entities in Palo Alto favor hair testing due to its robust accuracy. Urine tests may miss recent drug use, but hair testing detects drug presence effectively, providing reliable data. This makes hair tests a preferred choice when comprehensive drug history evaluations are essential.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Palo Alto, PA, offers an extended detection window, capturing drug use over a period of up to 90 days. This duration ensures a thorough view of an individual's substance history. Employers benefit from a more comprehensive understanding of applicants or employees, gaining insight into long-term behavior rather than recent activity alone.

The long detection window is a significant advantage over other testing methods. In Palo Alto, companies appreciate the capability to assess past substance use patterns, thus making informed hiring and retention decisions. This holistic view aids in maintaining a drug-free workplace environment with greater certainty.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Palo Alto, PA, the hair follicle test is celebrated for its tamper-resistant nature. Sample adulteration risks are significantly minimized, leading to unquestionable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
