In the community of Penfield, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing presents in-depth hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair or alcohol test is what you're after, our organization excels in such assessments, with facilities available in every city across the country to cater to your testing needs. Typically, hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body are needed. Our hair tests can evaluate for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Hair follicle testing has become a predominant method in the realm of drug testing. Increasingly adopted by employers, the courts, and substance abuse specialists, this method is preferred over the traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs rely on these tests. They offer a critical advantage by providing a wider detection window for drug intake, typically up to 90 days, and the monitored collection process makes them almost tamper-proof. However, urine tests still offer better accuracy when identifying substances consumed within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a comprehensive, long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers as the hair naturally grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage up to about a 3-month span. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and uncomplicated to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional features, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's beneficial to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is first processed in a lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not included in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in many samples, a positive result must be verified before it can be validated in legal proceedings. Samples that return a presumptive positive from Screening require further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging techniques to execute.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: A hair drug test is difficult to tamper with, which makes the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent input: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually have a higher cost than other drug testing procedures.
  • Inconsistency in results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Prevails Over Urine Tests in Penfield, PA: Hair follicle tests offer superior advantages compared to traditional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
