Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Penn State Erie (Behrend), Pennsylvania. If seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair analysis is supported by a network of centers Nationwide equipped for such testing. Around 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is typically sufficient. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing needs.

In recent trends, hair follicle drug testing has become a mainstay in conducting drug assessments. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Used by institutions with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary cases, the primary advantage is a longer drug detection window—typically extending up to 90 days—collected through observation, thus eliminating cheating. For recent drug use detection, within the last 5 days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair provides an extended timeline of alcohol and drug intake by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the cultivated hair strand. When procured close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of roughly up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps in the laboratory workflow for producing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This comprises confirming that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accession Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for validity in legal proceedings. Any specimen that is presumptively positive during Screening necessitates a secondary verification.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at considerably lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection frame: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical information: It can depict a trend of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of pinpointing recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variance can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
