Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Plains, Pennsylvania. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair-based testing, with facilities in every city Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown or body. Hair assessments can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly common method for drug assessments. Numerous workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are demanding a hair drug test over a traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers utilize hair follicle tests. Its main advantage is a prolonged detection window for substances, usually up to 90 days; it involves a monitored collection and is hard to manipulate. Yet, for drug use detection within the preceding 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now recognized as a significant means for uncovering alcohol and drug consumption. The hair encapsulates a prolonged record of drugs and alcohol by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. If gathered near the scalp, hair can demonstrate a detection range of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to obtain, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), and nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal illustration for assessment and confirmation. When testing for EtG, additional analyses, and/or above 10-panel tests, it’s preferred to have a specimen of 150mg. The specimen should be weighed on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may suffice. In terms of head hair, only scalp hair is pertinent. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The first step, Accessioning, involves initial entry of the sample into the lab system. It includes ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. It serves as an economical means to check for drug usage in most samples, but a positive result from this phase requires confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive outcome in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample has a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are derived from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology.

Positive screening results require Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are washed ahead of confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is meticulously reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly tough to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers a chronological pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair shade and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle situated beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
