At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Pleasureville, Pennsylvania. Whether you're seeking a drug or alcohol screen, our expertise lies in hair analysis. With testing centers across the nation, we're ready to conduct your assessment. Typically, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customized options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the norm. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine screens. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and parolees benefit from this method's extended detection period, often up to 90 days. Samples are gathered under observation, minimizing tampering. Still, for detecting recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain paramount.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair can capture a comprehensive record of substance usage over time due to the retention of biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is preferred. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair only. "Body hair" refers to any other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of entering a sample into the lab's system. This process entails checking if the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening offers an initial overview to identify drug abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use across most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be courtroom acceptable. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening need secondary verification.

Following a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging approach to conduct.

Confirmation for dual positive screenings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory testing process is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines for Hair and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a much shorter detection frame.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is nearly impossible to alter a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers usage patterns: It can display a usage pattern over time, instead of only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs only become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Results may vary: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the examination investigates the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
