Accredited Drug Testing offers inclusive hair follicle drug assessments in Plymptonville, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair-based testing, with facilities in every major city nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is generally needed. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, the hair follicle test has gained traction in drug screening. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance professionals now favor hair testing over urine analysis. It's particularly beneficial for strict drug policies in workplaces, courts, and for individuals on probation. Hair testing boasts a longer 90-day detection window and is challenging to manipulate, although urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent use.

What it is, How it works

Identifying drug and alcohol use via hair testing is now recognized as an effective approach. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, it can detect alcohol and drugs for up to a three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't supply.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need additional confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positives at Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), maintaining hair drug screening as a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows usage patterns: Provides a timeline of drug use, unlike tests showing only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Results may vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences affecting drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
