Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Polk, Pennsylvania. Our expertise in hair testing spans across all cities nationwide, with specialized centers ready to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair can be utilized. Hair tests offer analysis options for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom hair testing needs.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a favored method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opt for these over standard urine tests. They are essential for employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal jurisdictions, and those on probation. Key advantages include a 90-day detection window, observed collection, and difficulty in manipulation. Yet, for detecting recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair chronicles long-term exposure to substances. A sample cut close to the scalp can offer a detection span of up to three months for both drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily manipulated, and convenient to ship.

A preferred sample consists of a 1.5-inch length of roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil), typically weighing around 100mg, optimal for both initial screening and verification. For comprehensive tests beyond ten panels or EtG, a weight of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If unavailable, body hair may substitute. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory stage, where a sample enters the lab’s system. This stage encompasses confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing details not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a rapid initial evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening effectively eliminates drug usage prospects across most samples, a positive finding mandates confirmation for legal validity. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Once a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional strands are extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. This process involves isolating drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other media (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Verification of a positive Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. This entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes rigorous inspection under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection frame.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Altering hair drug test outcomes is challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical insight: It reveals trends in drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis concerns the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
