Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Prospectville, Pennsylvania. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? Our expertise lies in hair testing, with test centers spread across every city nationwide, ready for hair sample collection. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices for testing. These tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customizable hair testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a popular method for drug detection. Today, many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers adhering to zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probationers find hair tests invaluable. A key advantage lies in its long drug detection period, up to 90 days, observed during collection, and tough to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust technique for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of about 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than found in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation standards and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical information: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variances: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
