Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pymatuning North, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing. We maintain testing centers nationwide that administer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is needed. Hair tests check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair tests over standard urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs value hair testing. This method's major advantage is a detection window up to 90 days, observed directly, and it's challenging to manipulate. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of alcohol and other substances through embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered close to the scalp, it can offer a detectability period of roughly up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, quite challenging to alter, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional amount of body hair can be obtained. When discussing head hair, we are exclusively referring to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome entail Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes verifying if the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a primary rapid assessment for commonly abused substances. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug consumption in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is indicated as possibly positive at the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is accomplished with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. The overall laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on hair drug tests is quite tough, hence results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variabilities: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pymatuning North, PA, hair follicle testing has emerged as a superior method over traditional urine testing. One key advantage is its enhanced detection period, reaching up to 90 days.
This offers a more thorough insight into an individual's drug history, whereas urine tests typically cover a shorter timeframe.

When comparing the efficacy, hair follicle testing's accuracy and durability stand out. While urine tests are common, they don't provide the same level of long-term monitoring or resistance to manipulation as hair tests do.

  • Extended detection window
  • Minimized test evasion risks

Extended Detection Window

In Pymatuning North, PA, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a significant advantage. By detecting substance use up to 90 days prior, employers gain a broad overview of a candidate or employee’s drug use history.
This long duration of tracking ensures no recent substance misuse goes unnoticed.

Employers benefit greatly from this comprehensive insight, as it aids in maintaining a safe and compliant workplace environment. Drug history data becomes an integral part of hiring or continued employment decisions.

  • Effective long-term monitoring
  • More data points for informed decisions

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
